Why do newly weds cry at weddings?
That there are many people who cannot control themselves at weddings is something that has been a puzzle to many. It is not just the newly weds but even those in attendance – mostly relatives.
Indeed, some even cry watching wedding on television. Some get a little shaky during the vows but manage to control their bubbling emotions only to cry a bunch during the reception.
The only exception that one can begin to comprehend is when the father to the bride sheds tears as he gives her hand away. Especially, if he is giving away a virtuous girl, who, say, played by the church or customary laws and preserved her virginity.
Like when Brelyn Bowman of Maryland, US, married Timothy Bowman in 2005 and presented her father with a “certificate of purity” signed by a gynecologist confirming that her hymen was still intact as she had pledged.
At the wedding, Brelyn presented her father, pastor Mike Freeman, with the certificate. The “certificate of purity” was signed by a doctor as proof for her father that Brelyn’s hymen remained intact ahead of her wedding day.
Though Freeman did not cry, even if he did, one can understand. Or what do you think?
Indeed, there is a saying that the reason Muslim fathers cry at weddings is because they know their daughters are going to have sex for the first time.
We were reminded of this when a picture emerged of a Nigerian couple crying after exchanging vows, leading to rave reactions online.
” Awww…makes me wanna cry! Their love must have stood the test of time, and now,it’s happening real! Congratulations darlings,xo #LoveisaBeautifulThang,” one Uju Phil reacted to the photo of Nneka Anyina and her husband, Eze published by http://www.lindaikejisblog.com/.
However, one wag claimed the crying was because they were leaving behind their ex-lovers to begin a commitment to monogamy.
“It’s not easy to forget ur ex hmmmm happy married life to dem,” said Vinna Saviour.
