Security authorities in Marakwet West have arrested a 19 year man who allegedly poured poison in to a borehole serving over eleven families with intention to harm the consumers.
The suspect Hillary Kiprono is said to have allegedly poured an acaricide in to the borehole at Kaplenge village in Marakwet west on Thursday.
He then gave a stern warning to the children who were playing near it not to tell anyone about the action but the suspicious children notified their parents who confirmed the poisoning and alerted authorities.
According to Kaplenge Sub location assistant Chief Abraham Chemisto, upon interrogation, the suspect shocked everyone when he blamed the evil spirits for his actions.
“The suspect told us that there were evil spirits pushing him to poison the borehole; of course we were not convinced by the answer and after probing him more, he cited family problems,” said the assistant chief.
“He was arrested and taken to Kapsowar police station for further interrogation,” Chemisto added.

The assistant chief said the borehole has been sealed after public health officials visited the area following the incident. “Public health officials took samples of the water and directed that we seal the borehole as they will be coming back to collect more samples,” Chemisto said.
He said other nearby three boreholes have also been sealed following recommendations by the public health officers who said the water sources may be contaminated by the same arcaricide that, he noted is lethal to human beings.
